The Sort Text Lines tool organizes your text lines in various orders with a single click. Whether you need alphabetical sorting for a list, length-based sorting for data analysis, or a random shuffle, this tool provides multiple sorting options.
Sorting text is a fundamental operation in data processing and content management. Our tool offers six sorting modes: A-Z (ascending alphabetical), Z-A (descending alphabetical), Length shortest to longest, Length longest to shortest, Numeric sorting, and Random shuffle. Each mode serves different use cases and produces instant results.
Alphabetical sorting (A-Z and Z-A) is perfect for organizing name lists, glossaries, bibliographies, and any content that needs alphabetical order. Length-based sorting helps identify the shortest or longest entries in your data, useful for content analysis and data cleaning. Numeric sorting correctly orders numbers (1, 2, 10 rather than 1, 10, 2 as alphabetical would produce).
The random shuffle option is useful for randomizing lists, creating random orders for contests or assignments, and testing data with different arrangements. Each click generates a new random order.
This tool saves time compared to manually sorting lines or importing data into a spreadsheet just for sorting. It handles text of any length and processes everything instantly in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does alphabetical sorting handle uppercase and lowercase?
Our alphabetical sorting is case-insensitive by default, so "apple" and "Apple" are sorted together.
How does numeric sorting work?
Numeric sorting extracts numbers from each line and sorts by their numeric value. Lines without numbers are placed at the end.
Can I sort by multiple criteria?
Currently, the tool sorts by one criterion at a time. Apply different sorts sequentially for multi-criteria sorting.
Does the random shuffle produce truly random results?
The tool uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm, which produces a fair random permutation. Each arrangement is equally likely.
Will sorting preserve empty lines?
Empty lines are included in the sort and will typically be grouped together at the beginning or end, depending on the sort direction.
Can I sort comma-separated values?
The tool sorts by complete lines. For CSV data, each line is treated as one sortable unit.
